LATEST PREMIER LEAGUE NEWS
5. Sunderland – 1999/00
Position: 7th, 58 points
After missing out on promotion in the previous season, Sunderland dominated the second division to return to the Premier League.
Kevin Phillips won the European Golden Boot award after scoring 30 goals in Sunderland̢۪s first season back in the top-flight.
The Black Cats also beat Newcastle 2-1 at St James̢۪ Park, which spelled the end of Ruud Gullit̢۪s reign.
Despite their high finish, Sunderland missed out on European football on goal difference.
4. Ipswich – 2000/01
Position: 5th, 66 points
Ipswich surprised everyone with their impressive fifth-placed finish, three points short of a Champions League spot.
But it was short-lived as they suffered relegation the season after. Now, 18 years on, the Tractor Boys are preparing for life in England̢۪s third tier.
3. Blackburn – 1992/93
Position: 4th, 71 points
Before the Premier League’s inaugural season, Blackburn paid Southampton a then-British record transfer fee of £3.5million for Alan Shearer.
The former England striker scored 16 goals in 21 games and Rovers would go on to win the Premier League title two seasons later with Shearer playing a starring role.
2. Nottingham Forest – 1994/95
Position: 3rd, 77 points
Alongside Newcastle, Nottingham Forest boast the joint-best Premier League finish for a newly-promoted club.
Manager Frank Clark was able to turn around Forest̢۪s fortunes following relegation and legendary boss Brian Clough̢۪s retirement.
The successful team included the likes of Colin Cooper, Stan Collymore and Stuart Pearce.
1.Newcastle – 1993/94
Position: 3rd, 77 points
Kevin Keegan had Andy Cole at his disposal as the striker scored 34 goals in a stunning campaign earning Cole the Young Player of the Year award.
The Magpies’ biggest win of the season came against Swindon in a 7-1 thrashing.
Cole’s form saw him join Manchester United in a £6million deal in January 1995 which saw Keegan address some Newcastle fans outside St James’ Park and explain the decision to sell him.
