Football: Napoli draw puts Juve coronation on hold

MILAN (AFP) - Napoli drew 1-1 with ten-man Genoa on Sunday (April 7) to ensure that Juventus will have to wait another week to seal an eighth consecutive Serie A title.
The champions have a 20-point advantage on second-placed Napoli, who they have beaten in both their head-to-head clashes, with seven games to go.  Juventus, who beat AC Milan 2-1 on Saturday, needed Napoli to lose to win the Scudetto for the 35th time, ahead of their Champions League quarter-final first leg against Ajax next week.
A draw next weekend at lowly SPAL would be enough for Massimiliano Allegri’s side to win the title which would be the first in Italy for Cristiano Ronaldo.
Despite their numerical advantage, Napoli struggled to contain the visitors who inflicted the only league defeat this season on Juventus last month.
Genoa went a man down when Stefano Sturaro was sent off on 28 minutes following a VAR review for a diving studs-up tackle on Allan.  Dries Mertens blasted in the opener on 34 minutes, but Darko Lazovic pulled Genoa level just before the break.
Genoa goalkeeper Ionut Radu ensured his 14th-placed side went away with a point with a string of fine saves including two late on from Mertens and Kalidou Koulibaly.
â€Å“It’s a wake-up call, if we play like this in London, then we’re in trouble,” said Napoli coach Carlo Ancelotti ahead of next week’s Europa League game against Arsenal.

Atalanta let Milan off hook

Earlier, Atalanta missed the chance to move fourth and into the Champions League berths at the expense of AC Milan with a 0-0 draw against Inter Milan at the San Siro.  Inter are third on 57 points – a massive 27 points behind Juventus – with Milan five points adrift of their city rivals.
Bergamo side Atalanta are level on points with Milan but behind in fifth on goal difference.  Mauro Icardi returned to the San Siro for the first time since a defeat by Bologna on Feb 3, and was greeted with a mixture of whistles and cheers from the home crowd.
The Argentina striker had scored on his return at Genoa last weekend following six weeks out after being stripped of the captaincy over a contract dispute.
Teammate Matias Vecino thought he had scored minutes into the game but the goal was disallowed for offside, with Icardi also denied early.  Atalanta were without suspended Colombian striker Duvan Zapata, who has scored 20 times this season.
The visitors’ best chance came in the 48th minute when Alejandro Gomez failed to connect with a great Josip Ilicic cross in front of goal.  Lazio were held 2-2 at home against Sassuolo and sit seventh, three points off the top four, but with a game in hand.
Senad Lulic grabbed a point for Lazio five minutes into injury time to rescue a draw after their midweek defeat by lowly SPAL.
In Florence, substitute Daniel Ciofani grabbed a late win for second-from-bottom Frosinone to crush Fiorentina’s Europa League hopes.  Ciofani fired in the winner six minutes from time to gave the promoted team consecutive wins for the first time.  Fiorentina drop to 12 points off the Europa League berths, with coach Stefano Pioli’s position at risk.
Claudio Ranieri’s Roma, meanwhile, are back in the Europa League places after a 1-0 win over Sampdoria on Saturday and are now just a point off the Champions League spots.Â

Gareth Bale future: 91 per cent of Real Madrid fans vote for Welshman to leave LaLiga giants

Gareth Bale’s Real Madrid future appears to be hanging by a thread.

The Welshman has fallen down the pecking order at the Bernabeu with manager Zinedine Zidane even refusing to bring him off the bench as they slumped to a defeat at home to Real Betis last week.

Bale has had to get used to life on the bench especially after Zidane’s return as Real Madrid manager

Bale is on a whopping £650,000-a-week contract but it’s understood Los Blancos are desperate to get him off the wage bill as they look to revamp their attacking options this summer.

And it looks as though supporters are desperate to see the 29-year-old go too.

Spanish newspaper AS ran a poll giving Real fans their verdict on each player and whether they should stay or leave.

Almost five million took part in the survey and only nine per cent believe Bale should stay at Real.

Mariano Diaz, Zidane’s son Luca, Dani Ceballos and Isco were also urged to go. Meanwhile, Dani Caravajal, Vinicius Jr, Sergio Ramos, Brahim Diaz and Alvaro Odriozola were the top five players the fans want to see stay.

Bale went straight down the tunnel following Zidane’s latest snub on Sunday and did not wave goodbye to the Bernabeu crowd because ‘he has no plans to leave Real Madrid this summer’, according to reports in Spain.

Marca wrote on Tuesday, Bale ‘did not say goodbye to anyone; not his team-mates, not the coaching fans, nor the supporters because he has no plans to leave.

Bale reportedly told his team-mates that he’ll be happy to stay and ‘play golf’ next season if he’s not selected to play, according to Spanish radio station Radioestaio.

“I’ve got three years left on my contract,” he said.

“If they want me to go, they’ll need to pay me £15m per season. If not, I’ll stay here. And if I have to play golf, I will.”

Manchester City news: Pep Guardiola confirms Kevin De Bruyne could make timely return from injury for crucial Brighton showdown

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is hopeful Kevin De Bruyne could return from injury in time to face Brighton in Sunday’s pivotal Premier League showdown.

The Belgian has been out with a hamstring injury, but could feature at the Amex this weekend as leaders City bid to retain the title – which will be guaranteed with a victory.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Guardiola said: “He has made part of the training sessions for the past two days. He could (play).”

On Fernandinho the news was not so good, with Guardiola adding: “He is not available. I don’t know (about the FA Cup final) – but maybe.”

The City boss added on the prospect of facing Brighton: “We have analysed them this week.

“We know how well they defend. It is always difficult. We just have to focus on the game we play.”

The City boss preferred to concentrate on his own players rather than worry about Liverpool facing Wolves.

He said: “It is better to focus on what we have to do.

“If we win we don’t have to look at anything else. Why should we be distracted by anything else.”

Whatever the outcome on Sunday, Guardiola believes his players should be proud of the season they have produced.

City have already won the Carabao Cup this term and will try to add the FA Cup next week.

Guardiola said: “First of all it’s a dream to be here, I didn’t expect it when we were seven points behind.

“We’ve shown many things. If we make back to back it would be nice but nothing is going to change too much – the fact is we have done incredibly well all season.”

Danny Murphy has criticised journalist Rob Harris for quizzing Pep Guardiola about a Financial Fair Play investigation immediately after Manchester City completed a historic treble. Championship round-up: Reading get last-gasp draw at Norwich, Sheffield United held by Birmingham, Aston Villa earn seventh straight win

Following a busy night of EFL Championship action on Tuesday, there were six more games on Wednesday.

Below you can see the best of the action from the second tier.

Andy Rinomhota snatched a dramatic injury-time equaliser to earn Reading a point in a 2-2 draw with Championship leaders Norwich at Carrow Road.

It could be a crucial point for strugglers Reading

Yakou Meite’s 30th-minute goal looked like giving the struggling Royals an unlikely victory until late-goal specialists Norwich did it again.

Centre-back Ben Godfrey produced a superb finish in the 86th minute to equalise and two minutes later Christoph Zimmermann put the leaders ahead.

That looked to be that, but seven minutes into stoppage time Rinomhota guided the ball into the far corner, bringing Norwich’s eight-game winning run to an end.

Sheffield United had the chance to leapfrog Leeds into second place and close the gap to Norwich but they were held to a 1-1 draw by Birmingham.

Enda Stevens gave the Blades the lead in the 38th minute but Michael Morrison levelled four minutes later.

An eventful evening in Rotherham ended with 10-man Aston Villa securing a seventh consecutive win.

Tammy Abraham’s early penalty miss looked very costly when Tyrone Mings was penalised for handball in the other area and shown a second yellow card, with Will Vaulks converting.

But a third penalty was awarded just after the break, this time Rotherham defender Semi Ajayi being penalised for handball and Jonathan Kodjia succeeded where Abraham had failed.

Villa continue their good form having now won their last seven

Three minutes later a fine individual goal from Jack Grealish put Villa ahead and they held on for a 2-1 victory.

Brentford won for the first time in six matches, 2-0 against bottom side Ipswich, who are now hanging on to their Championship status by their fingernails.

Neal Maupay’s 25th goal of the season in the 20th minute put the Bees ahead and Ollie Watkins doubled the advantage eight minutes later.

An 89th-minute goal from Jordy de Wijs earned Hull a 2-1 victory over struggling Wigan, who had led through Nick Powell before Fraizer Campbell equalised.

Millwall picked up a potentially valuable point in a 0-0 draw with QPR.

Messi calls for search to continue for missing Sala

BARCELONA ̢ۢ Lionel Messi on Friday urged investigators to resume the search for missing striker Emiliano Sala, after police called off rescue operations and admitted the chances of finding him were "extremely remote".
Police from Guernsey abandoned the search on Thursday, after the light aircraft taking the Argentinian to Wales following his signing with Cardiff from Ligue 1 side Nantes disappeared from radar near the British island on Monday.
"While there is the possibility, a shred of hope, we ask that you please #NoDejenDeBuscar (don't stop searching) for Emiliano. All my strength to your family and friends," said the Barcelona striker on Instagram, with the hashtag #PRAYFORSALA.
His plea comes after Sala's father and other players, including Manchester City's Sergio Aguero, begged authorities to continue.
Sala's family have also asked Nantes not to commemorate the 28-year-old at today's French Cup clash with third-tier Entente Sannois Saint-Gratien.
"We ask you to respect the family who absolutely refuse to talk about mourning and ask us to keep believing," Nantes captain Valentin Rongier told more than 300 fans who attended an open training session on Thursday.
"It is for this reason that we are not going to have a minute's silence or a minute's applause because we still have hope."
Sala's sister, Romina, also vowed that she would never stop looking for her brother, before thanking Messi for his support.
She told a press conference in Cardiff on Friday: "He is a fighter. All he wanted was to play football and fulfil his dream. We are not going to stop looking, we are never going to stop."

Zaha would reportedly be allowed to leave ahead of the 2019/20 season if the right offer is made.

However, the report adds that the Ivory Coast international has had reservations about a potential a return due to his dismal stint with the club.
