Former Tottenham striker Darren Bent slams club who allegedly asked if Danny Rose was ‘crazy’ after mental health admission

Darren Bent has slammed the unnamed club who allegedly asked if Danny Rose was ‘crazy’ ahead of a proposed transfer last summer.

Tottenham star Rose bravely opened up about his battle with depression in the build up to the 2018 World Cup amid injury problems and the death of a close family member.

He was linked with a move away from Spurs before the start of the 2018/19 season – and told talkSPORT the unnamed club’s query left him ‘embarrassed’ and ‘angry’.

“That’s the message I was told by someone at my club,” Rose said exclusively to talkSPORT. “I was speaking to someone last summer and Spurs were aware of it, they was helping me out massively in trying to maybe get a deal sorted.

“There was no bid ever put in, so I don’t know how close it is without a bid being made.

“Tottenham were absolutely brilliant, that process they were trying to help me anyway possible.

“I was leaving training one afternoon and a senior official from the club stopped me in the car park and he said ‘we are aware you are speaking to someone and I have spoke to somebody and they would like to meet you’, and I said ‘yeah that is fine’ and he said ‘they just want to check that you are not crazy’.

“I have never been so embarrassed in all my life, I just wanted to get in my car and hide.”

Bent, who played for Spurs between 2007 and 2009, was shocked by Rose’s claim.

He told talkSPORT: “Danny Rose has been open enough to come out and speak about it [depression]… don’t punish him for it. It’s not a laughing matter.

“So regardless of whether it was taken out of context and people went ‘are you crazy?’ It’s so ignorant and rude. It’s crazy.

“Fair play to Danny for not exposing the football club because I know a lot of people that would have because it’s just poor.

“There’s nothing funny about that, he’s been big enough and bold enough to come out and speak about mental health issues because one thing that’s always labelled at footballers is ‘how can they have mental health issues? They earn all this money, what have they got to be sad about?’.

“He’s been open enough to come out and speak about the problems he’s had, he’s had family tragedies, people probably didn’t know that and all these different topics, and yet someone needs to meet him to see if he’s crazy.

“It’s not about that, it’s about what he does on the football pitch.”

Football: Liverpool beat Southampton 3-1 to return to top of Premier League

SOUTHAMPTON, United States (REUTERS) - Late goals by Mohamed Salah and Jordan Henderson earned Liverpool a crucial 3-1 victory at Southampton to move them back to the top of the Premier League on Friday (April 5).
For the second week running Liverpool looked like losing ground on Manchester City in a titanic title race, but once again Juergen Klopp's side would not be denied as they edged a step closer to a first league title since 1990.
With games running out they lead City by two points, although Pep Guardiola's champions have a game in hand.
Locked at 1-1 Liverpool were laying siege to the Southampton goal but it was Salah, who had not scored for eight games, who provided the moment of magic they desperately required in the 80th minute, racing away to score a majestic solo goal.
It was Salah's 50th Premier League goal for Liverpool and six minutes later Henderson, on as a substitute, wrapped it up with a close-range finish.
Shane Long had made it a nail-biting night for Liverpool's massed ranks of supporters when he fired relegation-threatened Southampton ahead in the ninth minute.
But Liverpool recovered from a surprisingly sluggish start and Naby Keita's header, his first goal for the club, levelled the scores before halftime.

Victory lifted Liverpool to 82 points from 33 games, with City on 80 from 32.
"It was very big. Every game is massive. We've got to win every game. I thought we showed great character in the first half," Henderson told Sky Sports.
"It was a big performance in the second half and a big result."
Liverpool needed a stoppage-time winner to beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 at Anfield last weekend and they were forced to do things the hard way again at St Mary's.
They were caught cold early on and Long punished them, calmly firing home after Ryan Bertrand's cross was flicked on.
It could have been worse with Long almost making it 2-0 but Keita's header calmed the nerves in the away ranks.
Liverpool dominated after the break but Southampton defended tenaciously, even if they were lucky when Maya Yoshida appeared to bring down Keita in the penalty area.
With the clock ticking down and Southampton enjoying a brief flurry of pressure, Liverpool broke and Salah drove forward at pace, making around 50 metres without a challenge before firing the ball past Angus Gunn.
Southampton, who remain five points above the drop zone, were flattened and Liverpool were spared any late frights when Roberto Firmino found Henderson who stroked home.
An ecstatic Klopp joined in the celebrations on the pitch with his players who face Chelsea at home next week.
"We have 82 points now, that is massive in this crazy league and everyone is waiting for us. I am really proud. It is incredible," the German said.

Declan Rice: Jack Collison believes West Ham midfielder can become captain and club legend if he stays

Jack Collison believes Declan Rice can go on to be a West Ham legend if he decides to stay with the club.

Rice has been a standout performer for the Hammers this season and is widely considered one of the brightest young talents in the Premier League.

The 20-year-old made his England debut in March and has been linked with a move away from the London Stadium.

Manchester City and Manchester United are both reportedly keeping close tabs on him.

Even manager Manuel Pellegrini suggested West Ham may sell their prized asset if the price was right.

Former West Ham academy product Collison, who played 121 times for the club, believes future teams can be built around Rice.

â€Å“He’s been fantastic hasn’t he? He really is the flag bearer for the academy at the moment,” Collison told talkSPORT at yesterday’s unveiling of the club’s new Academy training ground at Chadwell Heath.

â€Å“Obviously you have Nobes (Mark Noble) who has been there and done it all, he’s been going for ages.

â€Å“It’s great for us as a club to have some one like Declan, so fresh out of the under-23s, fresh into the first team who is going from strength to strength.

â€Å“Week in week out he’s been consistent with his performances. It’s great for us as a club to see him rewarded with an England cap.

â€Å“For Dec there will come a time, obviously for any young English player there is going to be talk of clubs coming in for you.

â€Å“I think he has an opportunity to really knuckle down and could be a future club captain and club legend.

â€Å“The fans love him here, you can tell he loves being here and there’s every opportunity that this manager, and upcoming manager, will build the upcoming squads around Declan Rice.

â€Å“He’s a fantastic young player and one thing that is obvious is his leadership qualities. The way he conducts the game and the way he plays it is clear he has an old head on young shoulders.”

Collison also spoke about the benefit of having a former academy player as captain of the club, like Noble is now.

â€Å“You really can’t underestimate the role that Nobes plays,” Collison added. â€Å“Within the first team he is the hub in that changing room, in terms of welcoming new players and letting people know what it means to play for West Ham.

â€Å“It’s a real unique club and a lot of the foreign players probably come over and are maybe not sure what to expect but Nobes is there to help them settle.

â€Å“It’s just not the role he plays there but in the academy, you see him down here watching the Under-15s and Under-16s.”

Vincent Kompany: Five player-managers who prove Manchester City captain has a very difficult task ahead

Vincent Kompany has announced he will leave Manchester City to become a player-manager at his former club Anderlecht.

The City skipper has been an incredible servant to the club since his £8.5million move from Hamburg in 2008.

Kompany has called time on his Man City career

There is no doubting he now faces a tricky challenge as he looks to combine success on and off the pitch.

Many iconic former players, let alone ones still playing, have failed in the management industry, with Arsenal legend Thierry Henry the latest to fall sword to the difficult job of coaching at Monaco this season.

But which former footballers have become player-managers and struggled with the role? talkSPORT.com has done some research to find out…

Romario (Vasco da Gama)

Romario in action for Vasco da Gama

6

Romario in action for Vasco da Gama

In 2007, Brazil legend Romario was given the player-management post at Vasco da Gama.

He started off his tenure quite well and chipped in with a fair few goals after selecting himself to lead the line.

But his reign came tumbling down just two months later after he failed a drugs test – which he claimed was to ward off hair loss – and ultimately he was axed from his post.

Stuart Pearce (Nottingham Forest)

6

Pearce’s stint in charge of Nottingham Forest turned sour

Pearce took charge of Nottingham Forest in the 1996/97 season and got off to an impressive start in the job.

He was named Premier League Manager of the Month for January after beating West Ham, Chelsea and Spurs and even got on the score sheet against the Blues.

However, his success didn’t last long and he was eventually sacked after the Reds succumbed to a barren run of results, losing four of six matches from the end of January to March.

The final nail in the coffin came when Forest lost 2-0 to Arsenal, although Pearce continued to play in the side that were eventually relegated.

Gary McAllister (Coventry City)

McAllister left Liverpool to become a player-manager of Coventry City

6

McAllister left Liverpool to become a player-manager of Coventry City

McAllister decided to leave Liverpool at the end of the 2001/02 season to become the player-manager at Coventry City.

He lasted just five months in the role having led the Sky Blues to several losses and multiple appalling performances.

Coventry had been relegated two seasons before and they looked as though they were heading down again but luckily they clung onto a 20th-place finish to remain two places above the relegation zone.

McAllister later managed Leeds where he would incredibly lose an FA Cup match to a village football club called Histon.

Edgar Davids (Barnet)

6

Davids decided to take over Barnet as a player-manager

Back in the 2012/13 season, Barnet were going through a bad patch of form and were hovering at the bottom of the League 2 table.

Edgar Davids, who had been playing some lower-league football in north London following his Spurs days, thought he could give a helping hand to the club and agreed to become player-manager of the Bees.

Just like Pearce, he started well and earned the Man of the Match award in his first match with the club.

However, he failed to keep Barnet up and the following season he was sent off three times before he resigned in January.

Anelka had a history of fractious relations with the many managers he worked with in his illustrious career, but Mumbai City were still willing to give him a shot at a player-manager role.

The Frenchman had a torrid time in charge and lasted just 14 games at the helm.

Anelka was eventually dismissed after leading them to 16 points from a possible 42.

Football: Stats show Liverpool face unprecedented challenge in English Premier League title race

Football: Stats show Liverpool face unprecedented challenge in English Premier League title race

LONDON (REUTERS) - History is on the side of leaders Liverpool as they chase a first English league title since 1990 but their four-point lead over Manchester City after 21 games is the smallest margin between the top two in over a century.
The last 11 teams with the equivalent of 52 or more points at the same stage since 1905-06 went on to lift the title, but the strength of this year's top four means Liverpool on 54 points face an especially daunting task.
Sports data company Gracenote have recalculated seasons before the English top flight moved from two to three points for a win in 1981 and say the data reveals that the current top four is the most dominant ever.
Liverpool, City, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea are separated by 10 points, and are on course to break the record cumulative tally of 333 points set by the top four in each of the last two seasons.
Of the 11 teams that won the league after leading at this stage since 1905-06, when 20 teams competed for the first time, many had sizeable leads unlike Liverpool's slender advantage this time round.
City, for instance, held a 14-point advantage over Chelsea at the same stage last year and are the first top-flight team to reach the 50-point mark after 21 games and not lead the table.
While wealthy teams at the top of the pile have improved, the evidence suggests those at the other end of the table have got comparatively worse.
Basement side Huddersfield Town's 10 points after 21 games is the lowest by any Premier League team since Derby County managed seven points 11 seasons ago, while Fulham's tally of 14 points is the lowest for a team in 19th place for six years.
Fulham are one of only four teams in the Premier League era to record 14 points or less at this stage and not be bottom of the league. The others Watford (1999-2000), Southampton (2004-2005) and Reading (2012-2013) were all relegated.
