England: How Three Lions could line-up in the UEFA Nations League without Harry Kane and Callum Hudson-Odoi

England: How Three Lions could line-up in the UEFA Nations League without Harry Kane and Callum Hudson-Odoi

It’s set to be a busy summer for England with UEFA Nations League glory in sight for Gareth Southgate’s men.

The Three Lions face a resurgent Netherlands side in the semi-finals of the competition in June – and it’s set to be a stern test for the World Cup semi-finalists.

The Netherlands, captained by Liverpool’s monstrous defender Virgil van Dijk, have a side littered with talent.

Southgate’s England are hoping for UEFA Nations League glory

Southgate’s England are hoping for UEFA Nations League glory

Ajax duo Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt are making waves in the Champions League this term and will be stars of the game for years to come, with the former already completing a £60million move to Barca.

While other stars such as Memphis Depay, Gini Wijnaldum and Daley Blind are also enjoying superb seasons for their respective clubs.

However, England under Southgate are a force to be reckoned with and we have some immense stars of our own.

But how could the Three Lions line-up in the Nations League, with Harry Kane and Callum Hudson-Odoi likely miss out due to injury? talkSPORT.com has given it’s verdict…

Formation: 4-3-3

Goalkeeper: Jordan Pickford

Jordan Pickford has had some shaky moments this season but he has still helped Everton on their way to the fifth most clean sheets in the league (12).

Apart from a few notable errors, such as his howler which gave Divock Origi a tap in for Liverpool in December, the stopper has done nothing to suggest he should be replaced in Southgate’s line-up.

Pickford deserves to keep his spot in the England line-up

6

Pickford deserves to keep his spot in the England line-up

His ability on the ball and superb distribution is key to how England play and that will be imperative to the Three Lions’ chances in the competition in the summer.

Defenders: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Harry Maguire, John Stones, Ben Chilwell

In a traditional back four, Trent Alexander-Arnold gets the nod over Kyle Walker at right-back.

The Liverpool star has once again been impressive this season, making the PFA Team of the Year and helping the Reds to a league-high 19 clean sheets.

The left-back slot is a little more tricky, with Danny Rose, Luke Shaw and Ben Chilwell all deserving of a spot.

Alexander-Arnold is widely regarded as one of the best young players in European football

6

Alexander-Arnold is widely regarded as one of the best young players in European football

But because the Foxes full-back was most impressive in the Euro qualifiers against Czech Republic and Montenegro, Chilwell gets the nod in the XI.

The familiar World Cup pairing of John Stones and Harry Maguire complete the defence for their ball-playing ability, with Everton’s Michael Keane and Burnley’s James Tarkowski waiting in the wings.

Midfielders: Declan Rice, Dele Alli, Jordan Henderson

Declan Rice has had an outstanding breakthrough season in the Premier League and has deservedly been nominated for the PFA Young Player of the Year award. He fills in the slot in front of the defence.

Dele Alli, although injury-struck for large parts of the season, has been brilliant for Spurs in recent weeks and has been instrumental to their good form. He also possesses the ability to score goals from midfield and contributes well defensively.

Rice has been a revelation for the Hammers this seasson

6

Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson completes the midfield trio following his solid displays for the title-chasing Reds this campaign.

Henderson also has leaderships skills, which is necessary to command authority in the young England line-up.

Forwards: Raheem Sterling, Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford

Raheem Sterling, in the absence of Harry Kane, will undoubtedly be England’s main man for the tournament should the Three Lions’ skipper be absent.

The City winger has had an incredible season and has gone from a very good player to a world class one this campaign.

Sterling will be England’s main man in the absence of Kane

6

Sterling will be England’s main man in the absence of Kane

Joining him in the front three is Borussia Dortmund starlet Jadon Sancho, who lit up the Bundesliga this season and Marcus Rashford, who is England’s best option up top without Kane, despite the United forward going through a barren run of form.

Callum Wilson is a more than capable replacement in the no.9 role, having netted 12 goals for the Cherries in a fine season for the forward.

Have a look at the line-up in full below…

With the Premier League season now into April, top-flight players are running the risk of being banned in the final few matches of the campaign.

An accumulation of 10 yellow cards will result in that player having to complete a two-match suspension, a penalty that often causes major headaches for managers.

Infantino backs Korean bid for women's World Cup
LONDON ̢ۢ Gianni Infantino, the president of world football governing body Fifa, has raised the prospect of North and South Korea co-hosting the next women's World Cup in 2023.
The move would be a huge statement in terms of cooperation between two nations that have been deeply divided for the past 70 years. There have also been discussions about a possible joint Olympic bid for the 2032 Games.
Speaking at the International FA Board meeting in Aberdeen, Scotland, Infantino said: "I have been hearing for the women's World Cup in 2023, the two Koreas. I have been hearing it would be great. It would show the power of football. They have been in a very, very difficult situation."
He revealed that a bid by an Asian country for the men's 2030 World Cup could not be completely ruled out even though Qatar, which is part of the Asian confederation, is hosting in 2022.
Traditionally, Fifa's rotation rules have meant a 12-year gap before a confederation can host a World Cup again. There have been suggestions that China could bid for 2030, although it is more likely to wait until 2034.
A joint British and Ireland bid for 2030 is being considered, while a South American bid involving Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and Chile has been launched.
"Generally, the more bidders we have, the better it is," the Swiss-Italian said. "I am so happy that we made a bidding process for the 2026 World Cup which was the first one in the history of the World Cup which has not been overshadowed by any scandal.
"We did it in a transparent and professional way, and we will take four years before we decide the 2030 World Cup, so we will have time to discuss all these topics."

Football: Liverpool not buckling under Man City pressure, says Guardiola

Football: Liverpool not buckling under Man City pressure, says Guardiola

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola does not believe Liverpool's recent stumbles in the title race have been the result of mounting pressure applied by his side.
City leapfrogged Jurgen Klopp's men to the top of the table on goal difference by winning at Everton on Wednesday (Feb 6), just a week after Liverpool blew the chance to move seven points clear.
Liverpool still have a game in hand with both sides locked on 62 points, but back-to-back draws against Leicester and West Ham have allowed City right back into the race.
City are at home to Chelsea on Sunday in a match Guardiola described as "a final".
They could kick-off back in second place as Liverpool host Bournemouth on Saturday.
"Tomorrow they play before us, I think things are going to change. The pressure," said Guardiola.
"Liverpool are exceptional, I don't have the feeling, Klopp, Virgil van Dijk feel the pressure, (Roberto) Firmino, (Mohamed) Salah, (Sadio) Mane.
"I feel they play good and try to win the games, I think they'll be there till the end and we have to be there to win our games."
Guardiola will have the luxury of recalling Kevin de Bruyne against his old side on Sunday after leaving the Belgian on the bench at Goodison Park in midweek.
De Bruyne came on in the final stages to set up Gabriel Jesus's second goal in a 2-0 City win, but Guardiola is wary of overplaying his side's player of the year last season after two long injury layoffs this season with knee problems.

'BE CAREFUL'

"There are times when team-mates are in better condition, in football what you have done in the past - you have to do it again in future," said Guardiola.
"We try to control the players, he played the last two. At Everton (on Wednesday), a few minutes, I want him to play as much as possible.
"He went out for five minutes and he was incredible. I want him to sustain that for a long time. When you're out a long time, I don't want him playing game, game, game."
Aymeric Laporte got City's opener against Everton, but the French centre-back has had to deputise at left-back in recent matches because of Benjamin Mendy's continued absence with a knee injury.
Mendy has played just 27 minutes of football since Nov 11 and Guardiola conceded that it could yet be some time before the French World Cup winner is fully match-fit.
"He's injured, it's not easy, meniscus," said Guardiola.
"He needs to re-adapt, it's not that if you start training in two days you are fit, he has to handle the effort we are putting on him - he has to be careful."
A social media post from Mendy suggesting he was in Hong Kong even drew an expletive when Guardiola was asked about his whereabouts.
However, Mendy later confirmed he was in fact in Barcelona, which the club were aware of, to receive treatment on his injury.

Arsenal transfer news: Unai Emery planning biggest EVER summer clear out with Ozil, Mustafi and Ospina set for chop – reports

Unai Emery is set to let SEVEN Arsenal first team members leave this season after losing patience, according to reports.

The Spaniard has enjoyed a satisfactory debut season at the Emirates after replacing Arsene Wenger in 2018.

However, there are several players who have failed to meet the former Sevilla manager’s lofty expectations.

Shkodran Mustafi could be one of the first out of the Emirates this summer

Shkodran Mustafi could be one of the first out of the Emirates this summer

Shkodran Mustafi has endured a difficult season at the back for the Gunners and will be sold if the club can recoup some of the £35million they dished out in 2016.

Former Germany teammate Mesut Ozil will also be allowed to leave in the summer, but only if a buyer can match his £350,000-a-week wages.

Reports suggest Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who arrived in a swap deal for Alexis Sanchez, will also be allowed to leave.

Calum Chambers, Mohamed Elneny, Carl Jenkinson, and David Ospina are thought to be on the market, The Sun claim.

Mesut Ozil could also be thrown onto the proverbial scrap heap

Mesut Ozil could also be thrown onto the proverbial scrap heap

Reports suggest injury-prone Danny Welbeck may well be offered a new deal to fend off interested Premier League parties.

However, Denis Suarez is set to return to Barcelona after his disastrous loan spell in north London.

Tottenham ace Christian Eriksen admits he ‘must be one of the luckiest guys on the planet’ after his error led to Raheem Sterling’s offside goal

Christian Eriksen has declared he ‘must be one of the luckiest guys on the planet’ after technology spared his blushes during Tottenham’s dramatic Champions League quarter-final second leg against Manchester City.

Leading on the away goals rule with the aggregate score level at 4-4 heading into the final moments of the game, it looked like Spurs had thrown it away in second-half injury time when Raheem Sterling seemingly completed his hat-trick to make it 5-4 to City.

However, VAR overturned the decision when replays showed that Sergio Aguero was in an offside position when supplying the assist for Sterling.

And the Denmark international was the most relieved player on the pitch after that, as it was his misjudged pass that led to City getting control of possession before the England forward found the back of the net.

“I must be one of the luckiest guys on the planet tonight,’ Eriksen told BT Sport in his post-match interview.

“I thought it was all over but It was a fun game. It was a rollercoaster. We gave them a lot but also got a lot – it was a weird game.”

Tottenham can now look forward to a semi-final with Ajax – which Eriksen says is a ‘fairytale’ as he gets sets to face his former club.

“After today we take a deep breath, it will be a fairytale to play them and fun to be back in the [Johan Cruyff] Arena again.”

Mauricio Pochettino’s men face another trip to the Etihad on Saturday in what could be a title-defining game for Pep Guardiola’s men as they continue to go toe-to-toe with Liverpool for the Premier League.

'I must be one of the luckiest guys on the planet tonight,' Eriksen admitted. 'I thought it was all over but it was a fun game. Thank God the ref gave offside.
