Sheffield United 2-0 Nottingham Forest: Blades pile pressure on Leeds in race for automatic promotion

Mark Duffy and Enda Stevens ensured Sheffield United beat 10-man Nottingham Forest 2-0 to give their hopes of finishing in the Championship top two a much-needed boost.

United were helped when Forest had Yohan Benalouane sent off two minutes into the second half.

United went into the game on the back of just one win in their last four matches, desperately needing a victory to boost their chances of securing automatic promotion.

Oliver Norwood tried an early effort for the home side, sending a long-range shot wide of the target.

Claudio Yacob had the first sight of goal for visitors Forest when he saw his fierce drive miss the target from 25 yards.

Forest’s Jack Colback was then shown a yellow card for simulation when he went down in the area following a challenge from George Baldock.

The hosts had a decent spell of possession, with Stevens’ delivery from the left posing problems for the opposition.

First, Stevens whipped in a low, in-swinging cross, which just evaded Gary Madine.

The wing-back then delivered a cross which was headed beyond the far post by David McGoldrick.

Another cross from Stevens again picked out McGoldrick, whose knock-down failed to find Madine.

Forest responded with Daryl Murphy running at the defence before shooting narrowly wide.

Shortly before the break, Norwood tried an effort from long range which was saved by Costel Pantilimon.

Yacob then had to hack the ball clear from inside the area when Stevens threatened to find a team-mate in a dangerous position.

The second period was less than two minutes old when Forest were reduced to 10 men. Benalouane was sent off after fouling McGoldrick just outside the area as the striker threatened to burst through.

From the resulting free-kick, the ball was laid off to John Fleck whose low drive was straight at Pantilimon.

Duffy struck the opening goal in the 51st minute, steadying himself in the left side of the area before arrowing his shot beyond Pantilimon into the top left corner of the keeper’s net.

The Forest goalkeeper made a fine reaction save moments later to keep out McGoldrick’s close-range effort.

As United continued to apply pressure, Norwood put an effort wide following a corner from Fleck, and Pantilimon was forced to touch a Duffy cross over the bar.

Forest never seriously threatened to mount a comeback, failing to test keeper Dean Henderson.

Stevens added a second goal in the 85th minute to make it a comfortable end to the game for the hosts.

McGoldrick received the ball just inside Forest’s half and advanced towards the box before slipping the ball to Stevens on the left side of the area and he produced a low, angled shot to beat Pantilimon.

Spurs somehow managed to make it through the match, dropping Dele Alli into a deeper role and using Fernando Llorente as a target man, where the Spaniard made a vital contribution with their ‘winning’ goal in the tie, despite being relatively poor when he took to the field.

With Sissoko being assessed and unlikely to play, or start at least, Pochettino now must make some big decisions which could ultimately alter the course of the Premier League title.

Liverpool’s run-in leaves them as favourites, just, but should City get revenge on Tottenham Hotspur, the ball would firmly be in Pep Guardiola’s court.

The Reds and the Anfield faithful, though, may fear the team Spurs might turn out on Saturday afternoon as they possibly rotate.

“The Premier League is different and we are fighting for different things,” said Pochettino. “Manchester City are trying to win the Premier League and for us, it’s so important to be in the top four for next season.

“We need to assess the players and need to be sure we are going there competing with fresh legs with the possibility to fight and challenge them again. That’s why we’re working so hard now to try to assess the players in the right way and try to mix players who can be competitive and have the possibility to win.

“City have an unbelievable squad, they can change and rotate the starting 11 and keep the same level on the pitch. With all the circumstances and some injuries, maybe we need to think about playing with younger players, not without experience, but with plenty of energy and keeping the same ideas – to be brave and try to compete.

“It’s going to be tough but we need to think about recovery and try to design the best strategy to try to be competitive.”

First of all, with Sissoko out, along with Winks, and possibly Dier too, Oliver Skipp may be given his biggest test yet.

The teenage central midfielder was heavily involved around December and January, starting two Premier League games and making five substitute appearances in total but is highly-rated, despite his inexperience at 18 years old.

His scuttling performances, could be aided with the friendly face of fellow younger star Kyle Walker-Peters, who seems a shoo-in to play given Kieran Trippier seems to be playing through the pain with a groin issue.

Walker-Peters is a favourite amongst fans, with many feeling he hasn’t had the chances he should have this season, although conceding the free-kick against Southampton which condemned Spurs to defeat earlier this year lost him some admirers.

Juan Foyth is also likely to get his biggest test but as part of a back-three in a rotated backline and while his ball-playing can get him into trouble he’s got the potential to throw in a superb display.

And with Heung-Min Son and Lucas Moura running themselves into the ground, one might get rested for the match with Brighton – and this could see Irish starlet Troy Parrott make a Premier League debut, although this is the most unlikely of the changes.

You can see the XI we’ve predicted could make an appearance but give Spurs have a top four spot on the line too there is still a chance Pochettino will squeeze every last drop out of his star men on Saturday.

England climb to fourth in FIFA world rankings after exceptional start to Euro 2020 qualifying

England have climbed one place to fourth in the FIFA world rankings.

The rise comes after Gareth Southgate’s side thrashed the Czech Republic and Montenegro at the start of their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign last month.

They put five past the Czechs before coming from behind to win 5-1 in Podgorica.

The Three Lions have leapfrogged Croatia – who beat Southgate’s side in last summer’s World Cup semi-finals – and are behind only Brazil, France and Belgium.

After a perfect start to their qualifying campaign, England are four points ahead of second place Bulgaria in Group A.

Euro 2016 semi-finalists Wales stay in 19th place following their 1-0 win over Slovakia, while the Republic of Ireland return to the top 30 after qualifying defeats of Gibraltar and Georgia.

They are yet to concede a goal under new boss Mick McCarthy.

Meanwhile, Northern Ireland have risen three positions to 33rd.

Scotland are the only home nation to drop places in the rankings. They have slipped four places to 44th after their humiliating 3-0 defeat to Kazakhstan and an uninspiring 2-0 win in San Marino.
