Chelsea news: Fans stuck at Luton airport and face race against time to make Europa League final

Chelsea fans have been left stranded at Luton airport after their flights were delayed as they tried to make their way to Baku on Wednesday morning.

The Blues’ official travel partner, Thomas Cook Sport, offered return economy flights for the 2,468-mile trip to Baku at a price of £979 earlier this month and that does not include the match ticket.

An apparent fuel issue with the chartered planes from Luton to Azerbaijan meant Chelsea supporters were left in limbo as their planes waited on the tarmac.

UEFA have been criticised for holding the final in Azerbaijan because of the difficulty for fans to get to the venue.

It is the latest disaster surrounding Wednesday’s Europa League final, with neither Arsenal or Chelsea selling out their allocation of tickets due to travel and prices.

Sky Sports are reporting the Gunners have returned 2,300 tickets while Chelsea are believed to be handing back around 4,000.

It would take around four days to get to the stadium via public transport and it will mean there will be just a handful of English supporters in the Olympic Stadium, which has a 68,700 capacity.

Supporters who have been willing to make the journey have faced an arduous 2,500 mile trek over several days as there are no direct flights to Baku.
