Wilfried Zaha racially abused on social media as EFL condemn racism after three incidents this weekend

Crystal Palace star Wilfried Zaha was called a ‘diving monkey’ on the same day there were three incidents of racist abuse in the English Football League.

Zaha, who won a penalty in Palace’s defeat of Newcastle, retweeted a message from a Newcastle fan, which read: “Such a diving Monkey @WilfriedZaha”.

The offensive tweet has since been deleted.

Elsewhere, Northampton Town pair Timi Elsnik and David Buchanan said some of their team-mates were racially abused at a hotel prior to their League Two match at Notts County.

The pair took to Twitter on Saturday night following the 2-2 draw at Meadow Lane to highlight the incident, with Elsnik writing: “Went for a pre match walk with the team in Nottingham and this young man outside the hotel started racially abusing some of our lads.

“The most disgusting thing I’ve seen & heard! He’s done it in front of his girl as well with no shame so he must do it all the time. Absolute idiot!”

Buchanan corroborated Elsnik’s version of events.

“Today I witnessed racial abuse to some of our players in the @Village_Hotels in Nottingham!” he wrote. “Can’t believe we still have scum like this in 2019! Credit to our boys who handle it impeccably.”

Furthermore, a Brentford season-ticket holder was removed from Griffin Park and arrested after he was alleged to have abused Derby̢۪s Duane Holmes, who reported the incident to his manager, Frank Lampard.

A Brentford statement read: “Brentford Football Club can confirm that a season-ticket holder was arrested following today’s game against Derby County.

“The man in question has been accused of committing a racially-aggravated public order offence in the later stages of today’s game. He was identified at the time, removed from the ground and subsequently arrested.

“Brentford FC will continue to liaise with the Metropolitan Police, who will now investigate the incident.

“The club utterly condemns discrimination of any kind. It is abhorrent and has no place in society and we are determined to drive it out of Griffin Park.

“The most severe sanctions will be imposed on any individual convicted of discrimination and we will await the result of the Police investigation before commenting further.”

Derby said in a statement that Holmes would ‘receive the club’s full support after being subjected to such abhorrent behaviour’.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed a man was in custody and an investigation was ongoing.

There were also allegations of racial abuse towards Wigan player Nathan Byrne, with the club reporting to the police a sickening message sent to the wing-back on social media.

Byrne posted a screenshot on his Twitter account of a sickening message he received following the Latics’ 2-2 draw with Bristol City.

The EFL condemned all forms of abuse in a statement released on Sunday.

“The EFL was saddened, disappointed and angered to hear of further reports of alleged racism following the conclusion of some matches on Saturday afternoon,” the statement read.

“It was exceptionally disappointing that this happened as clubs up and down the country were raising awareness of such issues as part of Kick it Out’s Week of Action.

“We cannot, and will not, accept this type of behaviour inside our stadiums, as we know our clubs won’t.

“We remain fully committed to continuing to work alongside The FA and Premier League as well as other relevant parties to ensure that football provides a welcoming environment for supporters attending matches and those participating in them.

“Our work with all EFL clubs continues and we will assess and develop our role in this area through our established Equality Code of Practice, our League-wide Inclusion Plan and our ongoing dedicated security operations, enhancing these where necessary.

“These initiatives deliver best practice advice and guidance for tackling all forms of discrimination and hate crime in stadiums, while we also continue to collaborate with Kick it Out to ensure we eradicate this reprehensible behaviour from our game.”
