Naby Keita: Liverpool midfielder confirmed to miss remainder of season with adductor injury

Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita will miss the remainder of the season with an adductor injury suffered during Wednesday’s Champions League defeat by Barcelona, it has been confirmed.

Keita, the Guinea international, was forced off during the first half of the 3-0 loss at Camp Nou, with Jordan Henderson brought on to replace him inside the opening 25 minutes.

Luis Suarez scored Barca’s first goal of the night almost immediately after Keita’s withdrawal, with Lionel Messi adding a second half brace to secure the hosts an emphatic lead heading into next week’s second leg.

Keita was later assessed by Liverpool’s medical staff, and Jurgen Klopp confirmed the midfielder faces two months out with an adductor injury.

“It was really unlucky,” the German said in a press conference. “Bad news. High grade adductor injury. The tendon is ruptured.

“Will keep him out for at least two months.

“Bad news for us and for Guinea with the Africa Cup of Nations coming up. Not nice.”

Liverpool’s Premier League season comes to an end next weekend with the visit of Wolves, with Saturday’s trip to Newcastle and Barcelona’s return match at Anfield scheduled to take place beforehand.

Should they complete a remarkable turnaround against the LaLiga giants, the Reds will also have to play the Champions League on June 1.

Keita joined Liverpool last summer, a year after the Reds agreed a deal with RB Leipzig to sign him. The 24-year-old has endured a tough debut season in English football, though he has recently shown a major improvement, and had scored three goals in the five appearances made ahead of Wednesday’s visit to Camp Nou.
