Chelsea news: Andrea Pirlo reveals the reason why he didn’t sign for Blues in 2009

Chelsea had the chance to sign Andrea Pirlo in 2009 but turned it down due to the Italian midfielder’s age.

Pirlo was 30 at the time and playing for AC Milan when his former manager Carlo Ancelotti tried to bring him to west London.

But Chelsea’s strict policy when it comes to signing players over 30 proved to be a crucial stumbling block in the deal.

The Blues only offer one-year deals to anyone aged 30 or over and opted not to sign the Italy international.

“I had the chance to come [to the Premier League] with Ancelotti to Chelsea and with Manchester City when I went to Juventus [in 2011],” Pirlo told the Daily Mail.

“Chelsea said that I was very old – 30 years old! And the other time I preferred to come to Juventus.

“For sure it would have been a fantastic experience but I’m happy that I decided to stay in Italy.”

Chelsea cannot sign any players this summer due to their two-window transfer ban imposed by FIFA.

The Blues are yet to appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) but recent reports suggest Stamford Bridge chiefs may accept the ban in the hope it may be reduced to just one window.

Although they cannot sign any players, there is set to be one high-profile departure in the coming days, with talisman Eden Hazard looking likely to seal his dream switch to Real Madrid in a £106m deal.
