Ben Foster has admitted Watford team-mate Troy Deeney ‘was not a million miles away’ with his assessment of the goalkeeper’s training regime.
Foster – who moved back to Vicarage Road in July – has been one of the top performing keepers in the Premier League this season and is a big reason why the eighth-place Hornets are enjoying their best top flight campaign since the 1980s.
The 35-year-old is currently level with David de Gea on seven Premier League clean sheets this season.
But, according to captain Deeney, it’s a miracle the former England glovesman is playing so well.
Speaking in a recent Watford fan forum, the striker said: “The guy eats s**t, trains twice a week, turns up on a Saturday and is f***ing unbelievable!”
It seems like Foster has got it all figured out since his return to Hertfordshire after 12 years away, as he revealed to Alan Brazil and David Seaman on Wednesday’s Sports Breakfast.
talkSPORT host Brazil asked: “Ben, that can’t be true, can it?â€
“He’s not a million miles away,†replied the shot-stopper.
“Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy my food.
“I obviously have to do a lot more gym work than I used to.
“But now I’ve found a nice balance. I think life is about enjoying yourself and that’s what I’m doing.â€
Seaman added: “Whatever you’re doing mate, keep doing it, because you’ve having a blinder!â€
In a recent interview, Foster admitted his lack of time on the training pitch is due to his previous injury record, having suffered three cruciate knee ligament ruptures.
When he’s not out on the field with his team-mates, he’s working hard in the gym to maintain his fitness.
He told the Evening Standard: “I don’t train all the time, just for the fact my body needs a rest and I don’t feel I need to train too much either.
“But on the days that I don’t train, I am in the gym doing a fair few kilometres on the watt bike!
“I have always found that training is not something that really floats my boat. I can’t really get the same buzz that I do on a Saturday afternoon.
“I seem to get this massive adrenaline rush on a Saturday. I can do stuff that I can’t do on a day-to-day basis in training. Couple that with my past injury record, it is probably wise and a clever move to not train as often just to extend the longevity of my playing career.â€
