Arsenal transfer news: Gunners reportedly preparing move for Exequiel Palacios as Real Madrid pull plug on approach

Arsenal are reportedly weighing up a move for River Plate midfielder Exequiel Palacios after his proposed transfer to Real Madrid collapsed last summer.

Palacios, 20, is very highly rated and has been included in Argentina’s final 23-man squad for this summer’s Copa America in Brazil.

And he’s expected to leave the Argentine giants after almost four years in the first team.

Palacios was being tracked by a number of European clubs including Real Madrid, who almost signed him for £20million last summer.

But an untimely injury saw Los Blancos pull the plug on the deal.

However, Argentinian radio station Radio Continental claim that Arsenal have emerged as the new favourites to land Palacios and could make an offer of their own.

It is understood Palacios’ release clause in his River contract is at £18m and he would therefore be within the Gunners’ transfer budget even if they do not qualify for the Champions League.

Palacios’ agent, Renato Corsi, also confirmed to Radio Continental that the midfielder ‘is leaving in June’ and has ‘clubs in England and Germany asking about him’.

The youngster helped River Plate win the Copa Libertadores last year.

He has been capped twice by Argentina but could add to it at the Copa America this summer.
