Scotland vs Kazakhstan: Alex McLeish should never have got the job, Craig Burley tells talkSPORT after Euro 2020 qualifying embarrassment

Former Scotland midfielder Craig Burley believes Alex McLeish should never have been given the Scotland job and insists a clear out at the Scottish Football Association is needed.

McLeish was appointed manager of the national side in February 2018, 11 years after the end of his first spell in charge and he has won four of his 11 matches to date.

However, the embarrassing 3-0 Euro 2020 qualification defeat to Kazakhstan – a team ranked 117th in the world – has added uncertainty to his immediate future.

And Burley, who won 46 Scotland caps during his career, could not believe what he was watching, as Scotland were 2-0 down after just 10 minutes.

â€Å“They got that great goal, well, it’s a great goal from Kazakhstan’s point of view,” he told talkSPORT’s Drivetime show about the hosts’ opener.

â€Å“It was a lovely ball from [Alexander] Merkel, who was great in the middle of the park. The guy played for AC Milan and ran the show, but the defending was horrible.

â€Å“My family are away at the moment, I’m home alone and I went over to check on my Brussels sprouts, looked up and it was 2-0 to Kazakhstan! I just couldn’t believe it.

â€Å“I like big Alex McLeish, I know him personally, but Alex should never have been back in charge.

â€Å“The SFA needs a clean out from top to bottom because they should never have gone back down the same route. They should have thought outside the box and tried something different.”

The shambles in Kazakhstan is a blow to hopes of automatic qualification to Euro 2020, even before Sunday’s second game of the campaign in San Marino.

McLeish’s side have already secured a place in the play-offs for a tournament by winning their Nations League section.

â€Å“I know people will point out we had a good Nations League – and I’ve enjoyed the Nations League – it’s an avenue to the Euros, but who wants to see an avenue to the Euros for teams like Scotland and other weak teams?” Burley added.

Burley was part of the last Scotland side to qualify for a major tournament – the 1998 World Cup – where he also scored one of his three goals

â€Å“They’re not going to enhance the Euros if they have a poor qualifying campaign and get through via the play-offs.

“Is that going to enhance the competition? Is it Hell.”

Slovenia and Lithuania are in the same Euro 2016 qualifying group as the Three Lions. Slovenia are 49th in the world and third in the group, while Lithuania (110th) are fifth. They have been in every one of England's Euro qualifying groups since the 1990s.

France 27-10 Scotland: Dark Blues lose second game in row

Sunderland's start to the season has been even worse than Wigan's. They lost their opener 3-1 to Charlton, then lost 1-0 to Liverpool and lost 2-1 to Man City mid week. They showed a much improved performance against Man City though. They battled throughout the second half and maybe should have got a point for their efforts.

It's damage limitation for Scotland in their Six Nations campaign as their two-decade wait to win in Paris goes on. France earned a 27-10 bonus-point victory thanks to tries from Romain Ntamack, Yoaan Huget and Gregory Alldritt's late double in a game where the injury-hit Dark Blues contributed to their own downfall for the second…
George Burley to stay on as Scotland manager following

Should Moyes have gone for more players, especially given the injuries to AJ and McFadden, and Beattie's poor form? I would have liked to see us bring a striker in for sure, but who could we have got? Nugent, who we might have gone for, was not available. Very few quality strikers have changed hands during this transfer window.
