Tottenham transfer news: Spurs step up interest in £26million rated Benfica starlet Jota

Tottenham have stepped up their interest in Benfica winger Jota, according to Portuguese newspaper Record.

The 20-year-old has had an impressive campaign with the Portuguese club, netting 10 goals and having a hand in eight more in 29 appearances in all competitions this season.

The Portugal U21 international has a release clause of £26.3 million and would certainly represent great value for money, especially in the age of inflated prices.

Mauricio Pochettino hasn’t made a single transfer in the last two windows, with Lucas Moura the last player signed by the club in a £25million move from Paris Saint-Germain in January 2018.

Pochettino has steered the club to consecutive top four finishes in that time and taken them to the Champions League final for the first time in their history, where they will play Liverpool on June 1.

But the Argentine has warned the club they will need to spend if they are serious about competing with Europe’s elite on a consistent basis.

“I am not open to start a new chapter with no plan, with no clear idea, with not being transparent, telling you and telling our fans what’s next, what is our objective,” the Tottenham boss said.

“I know very well how this business works. And we know very well that we need to operate in a different way – that doesn’t mean to spend more or less money.

“But if we expect every season to be in the final of the Champions League because it is our plan, we need to create a plan. And the plan maybe is different to what has happened in the last five years.

“And if we believe that if we operate in the same way that we have operated in the last five years we are going to be every season in the final of the Champions League, and we are going to be every season in the top four and competing against projects like Liverpool or Manchester City or Manchester United, I think we are very naive.”

Spurs have also been linked with Fulham teenager Ryan Sessegnon and former player Gareth Bale, who is no longer wanted at Real Madrid .
