Premier League results: Leicester hammer Huddersfield, Crystal Palace earn late win at Newcastle, Burnley beat Bournemouth

Leicester breezed past bottom side Huddersfield to make it four Premier League wins on the bounce under Brendan Rodgers.

Burnley secured a crucial three points on the road at Bournemouth to give Sean Dyche’s side some relegation breathing space.

While Crystal Palace edged past Newcastle in a tight encounter at St James’ Park thanks to a late Luka Milivojevic penalty.

BOURNEMOUTH 1-3 BURNLEY

Burnley boosted their Premier League survival hopes with a 3-1 victory over Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium.

Goals from Chris Wood, Ashley Westwood and Ashley Barnes helped the Clarets turn the game around and move eight points clear of the relegation zone.

Sean Dyche’s side had fallen behind in the fourth minute when striker Barnes diverted Jefferson Lerma’s flick from a free-kick into his own net.

But Burnley soon responded with two goals in as many minutes.

Wood netted his third goal in four games against Bournemouth in the 18th minute, heading in from close range after goalkeeper Asmir Begovic failed to claim a corner, before Westwood fired home.

Barnes added the third 12 minutes into the second half with an easy finish after Begovic spilled Charlie Taylor’s cross into Wood’s path.

HUDDERSFIELD 1-4 LEICESTER 

Jamie Vardy scored his seventh Premier League goal in six games as Leicester made it four straight wins with a 4-1 victory at relegated Huddersfield.

The in-form England striker notched his 14th and 15th goals of the season at either end of the second half as the Foxes maintained their momentum under manager Brendan Rodgers.

Youri Tielemans fired Leicester into a half-time lead and Vardy added their second before Huddersfield hit back through Aaron Mooy’s penalty.

James Maddison’s brilliant free-kick and Vardy’s late penalty were cruel on Huddersfield, but indicative of the gulf in class.

NEWCASTLE 0-1 CRYSTAL PALACE

Skipper Luka Milivojevic fired Crystal Palace to the brink of Premier League safety from the penalty spot as Newcastle were made to pay for missed chances.

Milivojevic’s 81st-minute spot-kick sealed in 1-0 away win in a tight affair at St James’ Park on a day when victory for either side was likely to effectively end their fears of being dragged into the relegation battle.

However, the Magpies’ leading scorer Salomon Rondon had earlier passed up a series of golden opportunities to put his side ahead in front of a crowd of 51,926, and the wait to secure their top-flight status goes on.

The Magpies, who were bidding for a sixth straight home win in the league for the first time since the 2003-04 season, now have 35 points with five games remaining, while their opponents are four better off.

Former Manchester United man Jesper Blomqvist believes the time was right for the club to announce Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as their new permanent manager.

Solskjaer was given a three-year contract by the Red Devils having excelled as caretaker boss.

The Norwegian has won 14 and drawn two of his first 19 games in charge.

Blomqvist believes it was the best time to reveal the news, telling talkSPORT: “It’s much better now for them and time for everyone to take the question marks away and everyone knows what is expected of them next season.

“They can also start to prepare with the club and find if they need new players, everything is now much easier for them to plan.”

A top four finished seemed unlikely under Jose Mourinho but Solskjaer has led them to just two points off Arsenal in that final Champions League place.

What has impressed Blomqvist more is the way they have been playing on the pitch.

He added: “I knew he would come in and change things around but the results speak for themselves.

“For me when you look at the players and their attitude on the pitch and how they’ve played and expressed themselves is the best thing to see.

“The players give everything, are running all the time and are fighting for each other, so that has been great.

“You definitely have to suspect that (Sir Alex Ferguson has given the thumbs up). He and Solskjaer have a close relationship and he has brought back that traditional way of playing by taking the club forward with youth and playing attacking football.

“For a lot of United supporters it is important to do it in the United way.”

Jim White also asked Blomqvist if he would like to be involved with the Solskjaer tenure at Old Trafford.

Blomqvist replied: “I would love to be involved. Maybe I will have to carry the water bottles or something but I would love to be involved.”

Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has reportedly agreed to sell the club for £350million to the cousin of Manchester City owner Sheikh Mansour.

The Sun claim Dubai-based billionaire Sheikh Khaled bin Zayed Al Nehayan is set to take over at St James’ Park.

Sheikh Khaled, 61, is a senior member of the Abu Dhabi royal family and last year failed with an attempted £2billion takeover of Liverpool.

He is said to be a lover of football with a keen interest in the Premier League, and looks set to join the list of mega-rich owners in the English top flight.

The reports claim contracts over the £350m sale have been signed by Ashley and the Sheikh and have been submitted to the Premier League.

Newcastle have not made an official comment, but The Chronicle report senior club sources have confirmed Sheikh Khaled’s interest and say talks have taken place.

However, they add there is ‘some way’ to go for the takeover to go through.

Of course, Newcastle have been here before with Ashley. Newcastle have been close to takeover attempts in the past from Amanda Staveley and Peter Kenyon, but ultimately they proved unsuccessful.

But it appears the Sports Direct boss – widely hated by the Toon Army, who have continuously campaign for him to leave their beloved club – has now decided to end his 12 year reign in charge at St James’ Park.

It is claimed the Sheikh will look to tie down manager Rafa Benitez’s future and provide the Spaniard funds to strengthen his squad when his takeover is complete.

He was a towering presence for Jurgen Klopp’s side, helping them to their best ever Premier League points total – and to Champions League success to make up for their domestic heartbreak.

The Netherlands international was a deserving winner of the award, though many believed Manchester City forward Sterling should also have claimed the title of Player of the Year.

Sterling, the England star, was named PFA Young Player of the Year… and he actually received Van Dijk’s vote for the main award!

“It was a tough choice between him and Bernardo Silva,” Van Dijk said in an interview you can hear in talkSPORT’s The Rise of Raheem documentary. “I think I put Bernardo Silva as Young Player of the Season.

“I think both of them have been outstanding.

“He [Sterling] has improved as a player this last 12 months, and he has been very important for City. Hopefully next year he’ll be a bit less so we [Liverpool] can have it better!

“But City have been outstanding. If you look at the whole team I could have picked five or maybe six players who could have been up there.”
