Transfer gossip: Arsenal ready to sign Gareth Southgate’s Godson and Newcastle starlet Freddie Woodman with Everton and Celtic also keen

Arsenal are in pole position to sign Newcastle United starlet Freddie Woodman this summer, according to reports.

And it is his relationship with one of the Gunners’ senior coaches which the Londoners will hope can give them an edge to sign the promising star.

Andy Woodman, Freddie’s dad, is Arsenal’s Head of Academy Goalkeeping and Under-23’s goalkeeping coach.

The former Northampton goalkeeper has written a book with former Crystal Palace teammate Gareth Southgate, who is also Freddie’s Godfather.

And, according to Chronicle Live, the keeper is ready to walk away from Tyneside in the summer.

Woodman has played in all three of Newcastle’s FA Cup games this season, but his contract at St James’ Park expires in 2020.

The shot-stopper was part of the England Under-20 side who lifted the World Cup in 2017 and has just turned 22.

If the Gunners are to land the highly-rated youngster, they will have to beat Celtic, Everton and Fulham to his signature.

Unai Emery is on the lookout for a replacement for the retiring Petr Cech and the Magpies starlet would fit the mould.

Now an England Under-21 international, Woodman has experienced regular senior football during loan spells for Hartlepool, Crawley, Kilmarnock and Aberdeen.
