Maurizio Sarri: Napoli fans unveil ‘Sarri one of us’ banner in honour of former boss who left Serie A giants for Chelsea last summer

This time last year, Maurizio Sarri was one of the highest rated managers across Europe.

But twelve months is a lifetime in football and the Italian has struggled in his first season in England.

Sarri’s Chelsea have been nowhere near title contenders Liverpool and Manchester City and are in a four-way battle against Tottenham, Arsenal and Manchester United for the remaining two Champions League spots.

The Blues’ bid for the top four suffered a huge setback as they were held to a draw at home to Burnley on Monday night and were unable to capitalise on their rivals’ results, who all lost at the weekend.

This was the latest in what have been numerous disappointments for Chelsea this season and fans have turned on Sarri multiple times – with some chanting ‘F*** Sarriball’ in criticism of the style of play he wants his team to produce on the pitch.

However, Sarri is still loved by fans over 1,000 miles away from London in Naples.

The 60-year-old left Napoli for Stamford Bridge last summer but there’s no bad blood judging by a banner which was unveiled by Napoli supporters during their Serie A match at home to Atalanta, which was happening just before Chelsea’s draw to Burnley.

The banner read: “Sarri. One of us”.

Napoli were also misfiring as they suffered a 2-1 defeat at the Stadio San Paolo and their season has somewhat tailed off.

They may be second in Serie A but leaders Juventus were crowned champions with five games to spare last weekend.

Meanwhile, Napoli lost to AC Milan in the quarter-finals of the Coppa Italia and were also knocked out of the Europa League by Arsenal last week.
